Seminar Programme
Following the success of last year's programme, PlayFair
2010 will again host a series of free
seminars and briefings designed to bring you right up to speed with
the latest in best practice, design and selection. Put
together by the API, the seminars are a great way to
further your understanding of what works best - and there's
plenty of opportunity for questioning the experts!
Running across both days - Tuesday 22nd & Wednesday 23rd.

Embedding the Play Strategy
Embedding the Play Strategy is non statutory guidance for
senior local decision makers including Local Strategic
Partnerships, Directors of Children's Services and their partners
on Children's Trust Boards. Building on the current £235 million
capital investment in children's play provision, it promotes a
joined up, multi agency approach to creating "playable communities"
which embeds play within top level local strategies for children,
communities and spatial planning. It does this by explaining how
play contributes to a wide range of national indicators and local
priorities and by setting out the processes for effective, joint
planning and commissioning of local play provision."

More than Swings and roundabouts!
An insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes by
the API and the added value that comes from using an API member
company. This visual presentation will highlight some of the
lobbying work and strategic alliances that the API are involved
with. It will demonstrate the commitment to the future of play and
some of the plans in place to ensure we are responding to the needs
of the Industry. The challenge to respond to changes in customer
requirements has been grasped by the members and much of this
innovation will be displayed. We will detail some of the services
that we offer to our customers and areas that we believe should be
further developed in the future.
Speaker: Michael Hoenigmann, API
Executive

Spaces, Designing for Outdoor Play - Making successful
places for everyone
Whilst the concept of "natural play" has become more
widely accepted, we still need to understand that adding boulders
and logs does not necessarily make a play area work. The
presentation looks at how place making can create social spaces for
all ages and provide a wealth of play opportunities for
children.
Speaker: Alison Brown Landscape Architect, South
Gloucestershire Council

Understanding children's play and its role in physical
activity
In this presentation it will be shown that not only are
children more active when they play than in equivalent structured
activities, but they also tend to walk when they go out to play,
and walking is more active than going by car. Children tend
to behave differently when not accompanied by an adult, so children
are losing opportunities to explore and build up social networks as
their volumes of independent mobility decrease.
Speaker: Roger Mackett, Professor of Transport, University
College London
